(EN) Greetings to all my readers,
In today's newsletter, we're diving into the concept of knolling. But what exactly is knolling? Let's shed some light on the matter with the help of ChatGPT:
“Knolling originally emerged in the realms of photography, design, and organization, popularized by Andrew Kromelow, a janitor at Frank Gehry’s furniture fabrication shop. The term was later coined by the artist Tom Sachs. Essentially, knolling involves arranging related objects neatly in a parallel or 90-degree angle grid on a flat surface. The goal is to make them visually appealing and well-organized.
This practice entails arranging items so they align parallel or perpendicular to each other, forming straight lines and right angles. It's commonly used in photography, art, design, and even in organizing workspaces or tools.”
Many people in my circle harbor significant apprehension towards AI and want nothing to do with it. They perceive AI as a looming threat, envisioning it as a colossal monster poised to render them obsolete and, ultimately, inferior. They fear becoming impoverished, intellectually diminished beings. I've been creating AI-generated images daily for a year now, and despite initial expectations, errors persist. AI visuals construct our reality in remarkably imaginative ways, as showcased in this newsletter through images featuring wildly abstract cutlery, fantastical clothing, intricate crystals, and artistically crafted fanciful shell shapes. It adds a touch of humor to the case of the corgi toys picture that I rendered and included in today's selection of images.
Even after a year, my rendered images exhibit distortions and errors, albeit captivating ones. Technology isn't everything in certain domains of life. AI is whimsical and remarkably imaginative.
This current state of affairs may be deeply ingrained in the architecture of Language Learning Models (LLMs). But is it desirable to strive for AI systems that replicate nature? Is it even achievable? I'm particularly interested in the realm of visuals. How will Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) fare?
I believe human involvement remains crucial. AI interprets reality based on algorithms and generations, often struggling to render an image exactly as envisioned, even with thorough text prompts. Is this a technological limitation or a coding issue? Will more processing power lead to greater accuracy, or is it a matter of training? Will the issue persist despite years of AI development?
As it stands, common fears of AI among people are often emotionally driven. Many view AI as omnipotent, threatening their freedoms. In reality, AI is simply a remarkable tool to work with.
(On the topic of freedoms, I find it perplexing how right-wing parties are gaining traction in Europe, how people become fanatical about football, or how some readily embrace structured, outrageous dogma. Portugal recently held elections, resulting in significant growth for the right-wing party. What can one say if it reflects the will of the people? Speaking of freedoms...!)

I typically feature a film created using AI-generated images. However, for this week's edition, I've included a film crafted almost entirely in Procreate. It's a straightforward piece that, despite its simplicity, required just as many hours as if I had used AI. The film consists of a simple narration accompanied by uncomplicated visuals. As always, you can find it on my YouTube channel: TitaCostaAI (and I also have another channel: TitaCostaTVArt).
The daily images on the blog are keeping up at a good pace. This week, I'm showcasing various knolling images.
That's all for now. Feel free to leave a comment. Am I correct in my perspective on AI in visuals, or am I still lacking information? I strive to remain impartial.
See you next week,
Tita Costa
O objetivo é torná-los visualmente atrativos e bem organizados.
A IA é caprichosa e incrivelmente imaginativa.
Procuro manter-me imparcial.
Até a próxima semana,
Tita Costa
