Peering Ahead into the Stellar System
Seers of Sustainability: Tony Seba and James Arbib.

I’ve been reflecting deeply on the transformations unfolding before us with the rapid advancement of AI. Listening to Geoffrey Hinton, it seems plausible that AI could one day surpass human control. But contrasting this perspective, the recent book Stellar: A World Beyond Limits, and How to Get There (March 2025) by Tony Seba and James Arbib offers a more hopeful vision—one where a positive revolution may already be underway.

Seba and Arbib describe our current society as an "extraction system"—a structure rooted in exploitation. In such a system, you're either exploiting or being exploited. Inequality, inflation, conflict, and environmental degradation are not anomalies but natural outcomes of this model.
In contrast, the Stellar System is emerging—powered by exponential technologies like AI, robotics, solar PV, wind turbines, batteries, precision biology, sensors, computing, digital communication, 3D printing, immersive computing, and blockchain. Many of these innovations thrive in decentralized environments, and their impact on energy, transport, food, intelligence, and labor is profound—potentially making these essentials abundant and nearly free.
However, we cannot simply layer the Stellar System on top of the old extraction model without risking dystopian outcomes. A true shift requires us to start fresh—with new values and structures. With artificial labor (robots) handling much of the work, we won’t be working for the system anymore. Instead, we must build systems based on collaboration rather than competition—ushering in an era of sustainable abundance.

Seba e Arbib descrevem a nossa sociedade atual como um "sistema de extração" — uma estrutura baseada na exploração. Neste sistema, ou se explora ou se é explorado. Desigualdade, inflação, conflito e degradação ambiental não são exceções, mas sim consequências naturais deste modelo.
Em contraste, está a emergir o Sistema Stellar — impulsionado por tecnologias exponenciais como IA, robótica, painéis solares, turbinas eólicas, baterias, biologia de precisão, sensores, computação, comunicação digital, impressão 3D, computação imersiva e blockchain. Muitas destas inovações funcionam bem em ambientes descentralizados, e o seu impacto na energia, transporte, alimentação, inteligência e trabalho será profundo — tornando estes recursos quase gratuitos e abundantemente disponíveis.
No entanto, não podemos simplesmente sobrepor o Sistema Stellar ao velho modelo de extração sem correr o risco de cair numa distopia. Uma verdadeira mudança exige começar de novo — com novos valores e estruturas. Com o trabalho artificial (robôs) a assumir grande parte das tarefas, deixamos de trabalhar para o sistema. Em vez disso, teremos de construir sistemas baseados na colaboração, e não na competição — abrindo caminho para uma era de abundância sustentável.
